Dr Oliver Cronin is a Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist committed to delivering dedicated, evidence-based, and compassionate care. From routine cancer screening to complex endoscopic procedures, he combines clinical excellence with a personalised approach. Oliver is passionate about precision medicine, individualised treatment, and strongly advocates for disease prevention and early detection.

He has trained and worked in some of the world’s leading academic and clinical institutions. His interventional expertise spans high-quality gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and capsule endoscopy with a focus on detecting and safely removing pre-malignant polyps and early-stage cancers. Oliver has particular expertise in bowel cancer screening (including positive FOBT results) and risk assessment for individuals with a strong family history or genetic predispositions, such as polyposis syndromes.

In addition, he is highly skilled in managing upper gastrointestinal conditions, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), Barrett’s oesophagus, and achalasia.

Oliver graduated with high-distinction and a research honours from James Cook University in 2012. He completed Basic Physician training at St Vincent’s Hospital and advanced Gastroenterology training at University Hospital Geelong, St Vincent’s Hospital and the Alfred Hospital.

He was selected for a highly competitive 2-year “Advanced Endoscopic Resection and Therapeutics” Fellowship at Westmead Hospital, under the mentorship of Professor Michael Bourke, a world-leading authority in Endoscopy. His sub-speciality training included minimally-invasive endoscopic resection techniques for the resection of early gastrointestinal cancers (endoscopic submucosal dissection).

Oliver was then selected for a prestigious Fulbright Future Scholarship to attend NYU Langone, an innovative, high-volume quaternary Endoscopy centre in New York (USA), under the mentorship of Professor Gregory Haber. NYU Langone is consistently ranked amongst the top 3 hospitals in the United States.

Oliver is completing a PhD at the University of Sydney with a focus on high quality, safe and effective endoscopy. He has published >50 original papers, reviews and abstracts in leading international, peer-reviewed journals and he has presented his work at both local and international conferences. The impact of his research has been recognised with a post-graduate NHMRC Scholarship. He is a clinical lecturer at the University of Melbourne.

Outside of work, Oliver enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 young daughters. He is a keen runner and has completed over 15 marathons and 2 ironman triathlons.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy

A procedure that uses a flexible tube with a camera to examine the lower part of the colon, known as the sigmoid colon.

Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM)

A minimally invasive procedure to treat swallowing disorders by cutting the muscle layers of the esophagus.

Capsule endoscopy

A diagnostic procedure where a patient swallows a small, pill-sized camera that takes images of the gastrointestinal tract as it passes through.

Haemorrhoid banding

A procedure that involves placing a rubber band around the base of a hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply, causing it to shrink and fall off.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)

A procedure that uses an endoscope to remove large or potentially cancerous lesions from the gastrointestinal tract with precision.

Colonoscopy

A procedure that uses a flexible tube with a camera to examine the entire colon and rectum.

Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)

A procedure that removes abnormal or cancerous tissues from the digestive tract using an endoscope and special tools.
